I was in a dark mood when we returned to Hedgehog Hollow. Sam’s car was in the farmyard, so she was obviously back. Josh challenged whether I wouldn’t prefer to have some company, but I really wanted to be alone with my anger.

I pushed open the door at Meadow View, stormed into the lounge, tossed my bag into the corner and released a frustrated screech.

Dad phoned a few minutes later. The youths had been long gone and Rainbow’s rescuer hadn’t been much help with descriptions – four average-sized youths wearing dark hoodies – which was understandable in the stressful situation, but unbelievably frustrating.

I wasn’t a big drinker and I never drank on my own, but that bottle of wine Mum had brought round for my broken heart was in the fridge. My heart was well and truly broken right now, so I poured myself a large glass.

I hadn’t eaten since my lunchtime toasties and the wine on an empty stomach went straight to my head. Wobbling a little, I poured a second glass, desperate to numb the pain. And the fear.

‘To the yobs who murder hedgehogs!’ I held up my glass and took a large gulp.

‘To the arseholes who mow down innocent women on zebra crossings and never get caught.’ Another gulp.

‘Where’s the justice in the world? Why do they all get away with it?’ The rest of the glass.

By the time I reached the end of the bottle, I was a mess, ricocheting from laughing hysterically to sobbing. It wasn’t just about Rainbow or Phoebe’s mother. This was about me.

‘To the sick bastards who prey on children.’ I raised my empty glass, tipped the final drops into my mouth and slammed it down onto the coffee table far too hard. The glass broke in my hand, a shard slicing my palm.

I rushed to the sink and thrust my hand under the cold water. It wasn’t deep, but it was long and painful. I needed help. I needed someone to talk to.

Wrapping a tea towel round my cut hand, I stumbled back into the lounge and reached for my phone. There was only one person I could call…

‘You were right about me having another secret,’ I cried when the call connected. ‘I need to tell you what it is. Can you come over to Hedgehog Hollow?’
